Tony got laid off a few days ago after 18 years of his dutiful
service to the Times organization. Although we were never Tony's
big fans in any regard...he served the organization as proscribed.
S.J. Cahn was another great guy that got the ax a few years back.
S.J. actually printed our "Letters to Editor". We used to say:
"S.J. has vision...and everyone else is wearing bi-focals!" S.J.
understood before the "Blogspolsion" that "the truth" is a terrible
thing to waste! Tony on the other hand believed in "old style big
city news editors". "Treat them like mushrooms! Keep 'em in the
dark and feed them fertilizer!"
In any event, Tony kept to his agenda and we kept to ours. If
any lessons are to be learned....it is that restricting the flow
of information...never works in anyone's favor. Bob Rush, Linda
Orozco and even Dolores Otting..have all tried to get information
out to the public...and were all held back by Editors like Tony;
"We are just doing our jobs!" They all have families, advertisers,
"electeds", bureaucrats and publishers that have no qualms about
threatening their very survival. We have to admit we understand
that mentality and have empathy - without a doubt. However, in the
words of my Pop, "You are just shoveling stuff against the tide!"
- when we submitted our unpublished diatribes! We never believed
that negativity and kept trying...but Tony wasn't buying!
Brady Rhoades is the new Editor of the Daily Pilot, under very stern
and financial restrictions. His budget is limited, he choices are
limited and who knows what else! The main concept here is to unwrap
the Print media...to reflect the "Techy World we live in!" Perhaps,
Brady will be more in touch with those within the Newport Beach
community that have been dedicated to making it better...no matter
what their political persuasions or economic standing! We certainly
hope Brady can do the job and keep our bless Daily Plot in business!
Public Service and Event announcements are a base to go from.
Hopefully, Brady can find one good "Investigative Reporter" that he
can turn to during crisis...that has no political axes to grind.
To Tony....dude...we know you will be landing on your feet
bigtime wherever you go. You have been a "Gatekeeper" for long
enough, along with folks like Kenny the Printer..and thusly have
maintained our emerging Beach Community long enough, now allowing
it to grow into the true International Resort and Global Business
Destination - that it is today!
