Dear Friends,

As politics have evolved in our city, it’s rare to see
one man funding the circumvention of our campaign contribution
limits. But it still happens and it’s happening now.

Overtime, many good citizens from all walks of life have
struggled to enact campaign laws that protect voters, as
best they can, from exploitation of the system by money
alone. But every law has its limitations and vulnerability
to those who would find a way to avoid its consequences.

Jack Croul, who spent $680,000 to place city hall on Newport
Center Park, is now out to get Councilman Keith Curry. Since
our campaign finance laws limit individuals to a $500
contribution, Mr. Croul is using hidden, out-of-town political
action committees to enable the use of unlimited funds. Mr.
Croul has funded so far more than $25,000 in hit pieces, slate
mailers, and polls for Dolores Otting.

Dolores Otting says all of this happened without her knowing
anything about it. Having been involved in political races
myself, this sort of disclaimer is always hard to believe.
Even more egregious is the statement I read in the press that
Mr. Croul didn’t know what the contents of the recent mailer
would be. If I were going to spend $25,000 or more to
influence an election, I would certainly want to know exactly
what I was foisting off on the voting public.

Councilman Curry took a courageous stand to defend Newport
Center Park and to honor his promises to the people. Now,
for whatever his reasons, Mr. Croul is using the big money
route to try to oust Councilman Curry and install someone
more controllable.

Perhaps it’s just naïve to think that Newport Beach voters
are anxious to keep our electioneering as close to home and
visible as possible. With very large amounts of money being
introduced by essentially one person and through out-of-town
committees, it’s as if Newport Beach is for sale to the
highest bidder and I don’t think any of us want that.

So, let’s try to push back this apparent power grab and say
“our city is not for sale”! You can help. Please send a
contribution in any amount (we have a $500 limit), including
the name of your employer to “Keith Curry for City Council”,
40 Vienna, Newport Beach, CA 92660. (Corporate contributions
are acceptable and contributions are not tax deductible.
Campaign ID Number 1282508)

Thanks so much,

Jean Watt

Newport Beach Councilmember 1988-1996
