Newport Beach Republican City Council Majority Threatened?

Before I start with this, I want to disclose that I've been involved with the Republican Party of Orange County and the California Republican Party for a few years now...

And

I was under the impression that the Republican Party of Orange County's foray into local elections was to help build and keep Republican majorities on their City Councils, School Boards, Water Boards, etc.

So Newport Beach has 6 out of their 7 Councilmembers as Registered republicans (note the small R).

In the two contested City Council races, there are two Republicans running against two Incumbent Republicans.

No worry here right?

It isn't like Republican Kermit Marsh running against the Liberal Democrat for Superior Court Judge.

Or Republican Christina Shea running against the Liberal Democrat for Mayor in Irvine.

Or Republican Devin Dwyer running against the Democrat Majority in Huntington Beach

Or Republican Jim Righeimer running against Democrats in Costa Mesa

Or...the list goes on and on...

We have Republicans running against Republicans here in Newport.

So...

Why is the Republican Party of Orange County pouring in Tens and Tens (and tens and tens and tens) of Thousands of dollars in the Newport Beach City Council election?

and before I get any further with this, yes I am very aware that these two incumbents have been endorsed by the Republican Party of Orange County, so they are entitled to getting the Republican Party of Orange County's support.

But...

$16,965.72 as of October 29th for Steve Rosansky

and

$15,958.50 as of October 29th for Keith Curry,

as well as

$16,622.28 as of October 29th against Keith Curry's opponent, Dolores Otting?

Steve's opponent Gloria Alkire is a lifelong Republican and Dolores Otting is not just a dedicated Republican, but she's a big wig for the Newport Harbor Republican Women Club.

$49,546.50 seems like a lot of money for the Republican Party of Orange County to pour into a Republican vs. Republican race.

I'm kinda confused here...
