History Not Friendly to Senatorial Presidential Hopefuls

With New Hampshire on the clock, lets take a look at history to show us why US Senators typically don't do well when running for President.

By asking a couple of questions:

1. When was the last time a United States Senator (who wasn't Vice President first) was elected President?

2. When was the last time a Northern Democrat was elected President.

If your answer to both questions is John F. Kennedy, you would be correct.

Both of these things happened 47 years ago.

Before that?

Franklin D. Roosevelt was the former Democratic Governor of New York elected to the Presidency 75 years ago.

Warren Harding was the Republican Senator from Ohio before he was elected 87 years ago.

The last Democratic US Senator?

James Buchanan was the Democratic US Senator from Pennsylvania until 1845, but was actually Secretary of State before he was elected President in 1857.

Most of the Presidents were Governors before they were elected to the Oval Office, with a couple of Generals thrown in there for good measure.

History is not on the US Senator's side...
