BIOS Update Procedure

All the latest motherboards of today, 486 / Pentium / Pentium Pro etc., that updates are easily obtained by taking the system BIOS flash component. The flash BIOS, you do not need to replace the EPROM component. Once you download the update host a floppy disk that allows users to store, protect and upgrade the system BIOS. Hard drive or network can also be used to run the latest update utility. However, memory managers can not be installed and updated.

Most pre-Pentium motherboards do not have a Flash BIOS. The following instructions do not apply to these tips. If your motherboard does not have a Flash BIOS (EEPROM), you must use an EPROM programmer to reprogram the BIOS chip. See your dealer for more information.

Please read the following instructions before beginning a flash update the BIOS:

A. Creating a boot disk (DOS)

• With non-formatted disk, type the following:

format a: / s

• If using a formatted disk, type:

sys:

This allows a clean boot when the new BIOS flashed.

B. BIOS download

• Download the correct BIOS file by clicking the BIOS file name to download.

• Save the BIOS file and flash utility file on the boot disk you created. Extract the BIOS file and flash utility. If you do not have an "unzip" utility, download WinZip for Windows 95 shareware / evaluation copy for this purpose at one time or from _www.winzip.com _www.pkware.com. Most CD-ROM in the computer magazines, have a shareware version of WinZip on them.

• You should extract the two files:

Flash BIOS utility, for example flash7265.exe (for example)

BIOS, for example 6152J900.bin (for example)

Use the latest flash utility available unless otherwise noted (either on the page of the BIOS or the archive). This information is usually provided.

C. Update the system BIOS

During startup, note the old BIOS version because you will need to use it to name the backup file of the BIOS.

Insert the bootable floppy disk containing the BIOS file and flash disk utility and restart the computer in MS-DOS, preferably version 6.22

• At the A:> prompt, type the corresponding Flash BIOS utility and the BIOS file with its extension.

For example:

flash625 615j900.bin

Flash Writer • Select the menu, select "Y", "Want to save BIOS?" If you want to save (backup), the current BIOS (recommended), type the name of the current BIOS and its extension after the file name of SAVE: eg:: \ 613J900.bin

Alternatively, select the "n" if you want to save the current BIOS. Beware, though, that you can not recover from a possible failure.

• Select "Y" to "Are you sure you program?"

• Wait until you see "Message: shutdown or reboot"

Once the BIOS has been loaded, remove the diskette and reboot the system. If you write to BIOS but can not complete the procedure, do not turn off because the computer will not be able to Boo, and you will not be given another chance to flash. In this case, let your system until you have resolved the problem (flashing BIOS with old file is a possible solution if you make a backup before)

Make sure the new BIOS version has been loaded properly by taking note of the identifier of the BIOS that the system is restarted.

For AMI BIOS

When the BIOS is successfully loaded, remove the diskette and reboot the system by holding down the "END" of power first before you enter the CMOS Setup. If you do not do it for the first time after starting the BIOS update, the system will hang.

BIOS Update Tips

Note:

1.Make never shut down or restart the computer during the flashing process. It will destroy the BIOS data. We also recommend making a copy of your current BIOS on the bootable floppy disk so you can reflash if you need. (This option is not available when flashing an AMI BIOS).

2nd If you have any problems installing your new BIOS, check the following:

Have you made a clean start?

In other words, you follow the steps above to create a bootable floppy disk? This ensures that when you start from "A" No device drivers diskette. Not to make a clean start is the most common reason for a message "Not enough memory" error when you try to flash a BIOS.

If you have not used a boot disk, or to ensure a clean start

an F5) by pressing the start

b) removing all device drivers in CONFIG.SYS including the HIMEM.SYS version. Do this using the Edit command.

Have you booted into DOS?

Starting Windows is another common reason to get a message "Not enough memory" error when you try to flash a BIOS. Be sure to boot to DOS with minimal drivers. Important: Booting into DOS mode does not mean selecting "Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode" from Windows98/95 shutdown menu or going to Prompt mode in Windows NT, but rather to follow the above procedure (format a: / s and rebooting from a: \).

Did you enter the full name of the flash utility and the BIOS and its extension?

Remember that you often have to add a drive letter (A: \) before flashing the BIOS. Example: When asked about the file name of the new BIOS file to your hard, if you work from c: \ your will need to type a: \ 615j900.bin 615j900.bin rather than alone.
