MOORLACH UPDATE - Revocation - September 11, 2007

This came to my work email after I had left for the day. I have a couple of thoughts on this.

1. Although I admire County Supervisor John Moorlach greatly and consider him one of the most principled Conservative and fiscal thinkers, I think he jumped the gun on this one.

2. I don't like his quote below where he hopes that "...not have any other "surprises" exposed by the media." Although investigative journalism exposes much, he, as an elected official, should know that what comes out of the press isn't always very accurate and is written in such a way to sell papers.

Anyway, here's Supervisor Moorlach's email below:

Well, the Board meeting started at 8:30 a.m. this morning and concluded around 20 minutes after 5 p.m. Those of us who maintained a quorum got a lunch break, but only for a little over an hour.

During the meeting I did not receive a second on my motion to adopt an urgency ordinance to revoke the delegation of authority to invest from the Treasurer. The Board preferred having a normal ordinance on their agenda in thirty days (October 16). Consequently, if that revocation is approved with at least three votes, it has to go to a second reading. If it passes on the second reading, the revocation is effective thirty days later. We also have a chance near the end of the year to not vote to renew the delegation, as it expires on December 31. So this story is not over.

Let’s hope that Chriss Street can keep a “boy scout” approach to his job, properly follow the County’s policies and procedures, and not have any other “surprises” exposed by the media.

Here are today’s articles, in the OC Register and LA Times, brought to you with the results of today’s Board meeting. You can begin to appreciate my personal concerns from the Register’s article. The LA Times article has some minor errors, but it gives a fair flavor of my relationship with Chriss.

Internal memos conflict with treasurer's version

Former allies Moorlach, Street are now foes in dispute over trust.
