72 Hours to Go
Over the next 72 hours the estimated 14% of likely voters who have supposedly not decided yet who they are voting for to the highest elected office in the free world have an extraordinary task in front of them. If a large enough percentage of them decide that they will not vote for Barack Obama, the predicted outcome of this election can go the other way, creating one of the most surprising results in Presidential election history. That this election is even close is a testimony to the mind-numbing cluelessness of the direction the Democratic Party went with their nomination. The economy has voters scared in a way they have not been in decades. The incumbent President is as unpopular as any in American history. A President of the same party has only been re-elected for three terms one period since World War II. This is just not supposed to be close.
And yet, somehow, someway, John McCain is still in it. Now, I suspect it is very possible that Tuesday night's results will prove he is not really in it. And if he loses the electoral college in dramatic fashion, I will not necessarily be shocked. But he also could win this, and the polls 72 hours out do not show the final nail in the coffin - a result virtually any other candidate the Democratic Party could have nominated would certainly have created by now- including the tooth fairy or the Easter Bunny.
But instead, they nominated Barack Obama - the most extremist, radical representation of nanny-socialism to have ever run for President in this country. In 2004 they put a man out there who used to say that American troops raped and pillaged Vietnamese women and children, and they asked him to be a war hawk, having him salute the country and "report for duty" at the Democratic convention. This year, they nominated a man who has unapologetically campaigned on the promise that he would openly converse with the most Hitlerian world leaders since, well, Hitler. To this day, in the face of virtually every single rational war opponent on the planet, he still refuses to acknowledge the plain and obvious relative success of the surge efforts in Iraq. Fortunately for Barack Obama, this election never became about foreign policy, because despite the alleged mass public opposition to the Iraq war, if this election had become about foreign policy it is he who would face near-certain defeat Tuesday night. Pacifism and internationalism may well be the future of American foreign policy, as many a Western Europe nation showed us exactly how to make such happen in less than a generation in the early part of the 20th century. But I doubt it. The last best hope on earth has not completely surrendered to the forces of moral ambiguity that we can see all over the planet. I am not excited about this man as our commander-in-chief, but frankly, I think he would be on the phone with Dick Cheney in a New York-minute if another, well, New York-minute took place (think 9/11). Like Jack Nicholson said, "you want me on that wall", and even Obama knows not to answer that 3am call with his resume and backbone in the state that it is.
However, foreign policy is for page 28 these days. And instead, the most extraordinary assault on free markets since such a thing have existed has taken place rhetorically in the last six weeks. I can not think of a subject that I have been more devoted to or interested in throughout my life (literally, since grammar school) than the defense of free markets as a path to prosperity. The media, the culture, and this Presidential campaign have managed to team up in the last six weeks - naturally taking advantage of the brutal state of affairs in the capital markets - to demonize the greatest force for good this country has ever had. I refer to the unashamed and passionate pursuit of a better life. I am not writing right now as to how this pursuit is intrinsically a joint spiritual and economic pursuit. That is outside my scope. My point is this: Obama is not campaigning with a fair amount of "political rhetoric" blended with a "mostly pro-market" ideology. He is campaigning - openly - as a man disgusted by business, by success, and by private property. Obama speaks with rhetoric so hostile to free markets, it makes some in Sweden blush. The notion of raising taxes on "corporations" in this environment (by "corporation", I am referring to the companies that sell goods and services to consumers, and also to the companies that hire moms and dads to come work for them) is indefensible. The concept of increasing payroll taxes on middle class people trying to provide for their families in the midst of declining home prices and increasing wage and job pressures is mystifying (and I would add, this is not a progressive tax; it is marginal, and represents a larger takeaway from checking account W-2 income than Clinton's income tax rate increases ever did). Threatening an American economy that has been surviving off of its resurgent export business with a trade war by picking a protectionist fight with our global trading partners is immoral. Campaigning on the notion that you would increase tax rates by 33% (from 15% to 20%) on long term capital gains during the biggest capital market contraction of a generation is frightening.
And the policy issues go on and on. If I thought the four examples I gave above, which you will note I described as "indefensible, mystifying, immoral, and frightening" - words that hopefully none will consider "offensive" - represented the extent of the damage he would do, I would not be nearly as scared. My fear comes from his ideology - not his lame policy proposals. I have been fond as a student of history of saying in recent years that this is not the Democratic Party of our grandparents - the party that elected Harry Truman and John Kennedy. Truthfully, this is not the Democratic Party of Bill Clinton either, who is Milton Friedman compared to Barack Obama. How that political party, and perhaps even this country, could veer so far to the Euro-socialism of the left in such a short period of time is as depressing as anything I can even imagine (though I have some theories). My prayer and plea is that Tuesday night, we will see that America has not done so.
72 hours to go. To the 14% of you who may not have made up your mind yet, I plead with you to remember that free men, and free markets, have made this the most prosperous and remarkable country that has ever existed on planet earth. We need to be taking steps towards even freer men, and even freer markets, not steps away. Barack Obama is to be feared and rejected, if nothing else, for the sake of your family and community. Happy Halloween.
Circumventing the Law - Newport Beach style...
But I'm a highly functioning...slow...adult.
So please explain this to me.
Newport Beach passes a Tough-on-Group-Home Ordinance.
Then Newport Beach starts to deal with each one of the Group Homes so they don't have to really follow the ordinance?
Or does Newport Beach deal with the Group Homes so they don't have to follow all of the ordinance? Just certain parts?
Following that example, any group/business/individual, if confronted with a City Ordinance they don't like, can individually (or collectively) negotiate with the City so they don't have to completely comply with it?
Why bother passing laws, THEN BRAG ABOUT HOW TOUGH THESE LAWS ARE, if they are just going to negotiate their way out of them for fear of legal challenges?
Doesn't that defeat the purpose of passing a tough law?
So let me recap...because I need to repeat things in order to understand them.
- Group Homes institutionalize parts of Newport Beach.
- Residents Complain about Group Homes(duh...)
- City passes Ordinance to appease angry residents regarding Group Homes.
- City, without Public notice/input, negotiates with Group Homes, to circumvent the Ordinance.

Skylar is a killer of the worst kind!
the Daily Pilot report on the terrible parental abuses of
the father of Killer Skylar DeLeon .....and why he shouldn't
be getting the Death Penalty....but we are!
Life and death issues..are certainly not to be taken either
lightly or without careful consideration. We get that! The
big problem is the severity of the crime. Here is a nice
Newport Beach couple....trying to sell their boat and retire
to their home and grandkids! Along comes a "shuck and jive
artist" that has greed and worse on his mind. The leader
of this group is no different than Charles Manson. He gets
his wife, pals and anyone else he can find...to put together
a "clever little plan" to rip off "the so-called rich" in
Newport Beach.
There have been millions and millions of children in this
country that have been either sexually, physically or deeply
emotionally ABUSED! Most do not wrap anchor chain around the
legs of two people and throw them off their own boat. Most
do not do whatever they could do to legally steal that boat
from the dead people and their family!
Hopefully, this is heinous enough crime.....that those at
fault will not only be held accountable...but will be punished
to the full extent of the law. There is only one question
worth consideration before the penalty is discussed:
Did they do it?
If they did.......let the judicial system follow the proper
course....and send the message to all - Unacceptable!
Newport Beach Republican City Council Majority Threatened?
And
I was under the impression that the Republican Party of Orange County's foray into local elections was to help build and keep Republican majorities on their City Councils, School Boards, Water Boards, etc.
So Newport Beach has 6 out of their 7 Councilmembers as Registered republicans (note the small R).
In the two contested City Council races, there are two Republicans running against two Incumbent Republicans.
No worry here right?
It isn't like Republican Kermit Marsh running against the Liberal Democrat for Superior Court Judge.
Or Republican Christina Shea running against the Liberal Democrat for Mayor in Irvine.
Or Republican Devin Dwyer running against the Democrat Majority in Huntington Beach
Or Republican Jim Righeimer running against Democrats in Costa Mesa
Or...the list goes on and on...
We have Republicans running against Republicans here in Newport.
So...
Why is the Republican Party of Orange County pouring in Tens and Tens (and tens and tens and tens) of Thousands of dollars in the Newport Beach City Council election?
and before I get any further with this, yes I am very aware that these two incumbents have been endorsed by the Republican Party of Orange County, so they are entitled to getting the Republican Party of Orange County's support.
But...
$16,965.72 as of October 29th for Steve Rosansky
and
$15,958.50 as of October 29th for Keith Curry,
as well as
$16,622.28 as of October 29th against Keith Curry's opponent, Dolores Otting?
Steve's opponent Gloria Alkire is a lifelong Republican and Dolores Otting is not just a dedicated Republican, but she's a big wig for the Newport Harbor Republican Women Club.
$49,546.50 seems like a lot of money for the Republican Party of Orange County to pour into a Republican vs. Republican race.
I'm kinda confused here...

Best Medical Assistant
Councilman Steve Rosansky Inconsistent?
"Newport councilman may have breached loan agreement."
Councilman Steve Rosansky agreed to living in a home to get a lower interest rate and lower homeowner's insurance.
But...he never did, according to himself in this Daily Pilot article about his Derelict House.
The best part of the OC Register article?
"Asked for an explanation, Rosansky at first said he had in fact occupied the property and thereby satisfied the "owner-occupied" provision because – in his words – there was no requirement for the property to be occupied for a specific length of time.
But that is not the case; the deed requires the property to be occupied within 60 days and used as a principal residence for at least one year. Told of that clause, Rosansky said he would have to review the deed before commenting."
After reviewing it...?"This is a personal financial matter and therefore I have no comment."
Oops.
No Comment because perhaps he committed a little bit of a no no, which fortunately for him, no local law enforcement agencies bother to enforce?
Should have thought about what you were going to say before you said it to the Jeff Overley of the OC Register huh?
It appears that Councilman Rosansky is his own worst enemy.

Newport Beach Councilmember Updates
Keith Curry has been getting his out on a Quarterly Basis, even before he was up for re-election, so you can't say that he's only doing this for that...
and Nancy Gardner has been getting hers out practically since the day after she got elected in 2006.
Anyway, I commend Keith for not mentioning his re-election campaign at all, instead focusing (like he typically) does on the going-ons in the City.
And Nancy's was sweet and simple, like usual.
Thanks to those two for their continued efforts on their newsletters.

Steve ain't no Sid!
Rosansky in his re-election bid. We have already voted
early in District #2 for Gloria Alkire. She seems like
a nice lady and we already had issues with originally
unelected - but chosen - Steve R.!
In today's Register/Local Section...we found: "Politician
owns an eyesore" by Jeff Overly. We like Jeff...he is a
no nonsense pragmatic type that we believe tries to report
the news ...as best he sees it. As everyone knows, Steve R.
is on the target list of the "Concerned Citizens of Newport
Beach"...that just made it as Number #103.....of the Daily
Pilot's Most Influential list...that we reported on earlier.
So, cutting to the chase; Steve seems to be a "slumlord" as
reported in the Register. Assistant City Manager Sharon
Wood seems to think the state of the Rosansky property is a
so bad that it is a "Public Nuisance"....which has generated
fines starting as far back as in June of 2007. The "Public
Nuisance" moniker is still "not enough to warrant criminal
charges" just yet says: Wood.
OK, we might remind everyone at this time about the famous
Sid Soffer case. Sid was the owner/operator of Sid's Blue
Beat down by the NB Pier and his other location up on Old
Newport Road. Sid continually caused problems at City Council
meetings in both Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. City Staffers
got put on the job to cause Sid grief. They ordered Sid to
remove several antique cars in front or on the side of his
restaurant up on Old Newport Road (rusting we must admit)
and because of his delay was found to be "in contempt of
court" finally....sentenced to jail....Sid ran off to Las
Vegas....and sadly died there several years later...away
from his beloved Newport-Mesa world. Sid was cranky but
humble.
Rosansky seems to be flirting with danger here and we would
advise the cranky and arrogant, Councilman....to pay closer
attention to his obvious civic responsibilities in this regard.
Rosansky is not a "civilian"....he is designated until thrown
out as a "City Father" and is supposed to set the example....
not be one!
In any event, we must fault Steve for at least "not paying
proper attention" during an election cycle! Does he in fact
rent to REHAB homes? Did he always have a conflict of interest
when the city was very engaged in trying to regulate these
facilities? Who knows? Eventually, it will all come out...one
way or the other - we certainly hope! The "Concerned Citizens
of Newport Beach" seem to be on the job...so we may see..soon
enough!
In the meantime, Steve.....clean up your property and make
it snappy! Steve, you have six days left!

...and the Hits Keep on Coming.
Unless he starts putting in his own personal dollars, with a smidgen over $3000 bucks in his campaign account as of October 18, it's hard to imagine how Rosansky will be able to respond in the mail to this piece and the inevitable final-weekend-before-the-election hit.
Add to that the OC Register's article about Rosansky's citation filled/money fine causing/"Public Nuisance" of a house...
and you get a recipe for an very interesting final week and a half.

A Man's Just Gotta Know his Limitations!
Years ago, when the Daily Pilot first came out with their
list of Most Influential Persons in the Newport-Mesa area,
it was done halfway tongue in cheek. Oddball people would
show up on the list and be mixed with the movers and shakers.
People cocked their heads and said: "Who?" When the famous
bearded Sid Soffer showed up...it was great! Then as the list
started to gain greater heft....people like Chris Cox...our
then Congressman got to join the ranks of Henry and Renee
Segerstrom, George and Judy Argyros, Tom Fuentes and Fletcher
Jones! Slowly, "electeds" were filtered in to the process!
Hey, this was Reagan Republican territory and by golly if "the
Pilot" happened to add the Director of Save Our Selves or some
other liberal organization it was considered an attempt at fair
reporting. Today Republican icon Scott Baugh and the Democrat,
Frank Barbro are sharing the Number #1 spot of the 103 Most
Influential.
Olympic Gold Medal Resident and "Dancing with the Stars" injury
victim Misty May-Treanor came in at Number #3....but we didn't
even see Kobe Bryant....either sharing that spot or even being
considered! Which is weird! 2nd District Supervisor John Moorlach
came in at Number #5, ahead of the all the money of Don Bren #6,
Henry and new wife Elizabeth Segerstrom #7 (Elizabeth not even
mentioned)and Henry and Susan Samueli #76 (Currently..under
indictment for Stock Option misdeeds)! Bill & Sue Gross (New
Money) did come in one ahead of Moorlach at the Number #4 spot!
Which is all really, really weird! If these people with billions
aren't Influential....then who is?
The controversy surrounding Independent Expenditures by
Jack Croul for Dolores Otting has launched him into the
Number #2 slot....while his pal America's Cup Captain Bill
Ficker was pulling up lame at #28! The current mojo and all
the razz-ma-tazz regarding Dolores Otting has moved our
darling Dolores onto the list for the first time at Number
#88 just behind our pal Dr. Jan Vandersloot at Number #87 -
which we do believe is deserved....but late...years late!
Dolores was not mentioned in reference to her running against
Council member: Keith Curry..not listed!
How "electeds" make this list every year is a bit disturbing...
in that....if they truly had the power....they probably should
have been spending time "fixing stuff" rather than considering
themselves "Most Influential". FED Bail Out Lead Congressman
John Campbell landed at Number #12, Ex Costa Mayor Mayor Gary
Monahan who is running again for Costa Mesa City Council came
in ahead of his pal Eric Bever at Number #29, while up for
re-election Bever got Number #32! Why Katrina Foley..another
CM Council member up for re-election got Number #31?
Back to Sports: Super Agent Scott Boras (for Manny Ramirez)
landed at Number #9....but the guy that made the Newport Beach
Film Festival actually happen...Leigh Steinberg...didn't even
make the list! Then what about Angel's Coach Mike Scioscia?
Nope! The Angels evidently didn't make it to the World Series
this year - so how Influential could they be?
Now let's get real here; NB City Council member Steve Rosansky
#23 and ahead of Dave Ellis at Number #24? Hey, we love Homer
Bludau our stalwart Newport Beach City Manager...but Number
#55, behind Allan Roeder of Costa Mesa at #41? Hey, the Pilot
had no qualms about making ties happen like Bob and Jeff Teller
and maybe 10 more! Rosansky and Ellis...certainly shouldn't
list that high on anyones scale! Influential? How about just
plain bugging?
Let's just say that we were pleased to see Assemblyman Chuck
DeVore get listed along with Wendy Leece and Alan Mansoor..
Tom Harman, Dana Rohrabacher, Debbie Cook, Jim Righeimer, Ed
Selich and Van Tran too! However, these are all "just electeds"
and hardly as "Influential" as say:
"Hoag Hospital", "The Lincoln Club", "Fashion Island", "The
Toshiba Classic", Mr. G and Producer of "The OC" or even Paul
Salata and "Mr. Irrelevant Week". Aren't they just supposed
to be: "Public Servants or Representatives - for the people?"
How about the Army Corps of Engineers? You know, the ones
that don't want to spend the government money to dredge our
bay! They seem pretty "Influential".
Let's just say there are a few holes in the list this year.
Award winning Blogger; Geoff West - "The Bubbling Cauldron"
is perhaps one of the most consistent and caring voices in the
Newport Mesa area. "Influential"? Very! Just a glaring Daily
Pilot oversight we suppose! Let us hope that next year..the
103 Most Influential list..will not be dedicated to "Electeds"
or "Bureaucrats"! How about people that are doing the caring
and loving service for the Newport Mesa Community or that are
celebrities that live in our community - making a difference!
Those are the ones - truly the "Most Influential"!

Tips menulis paid review
Sukses..

Stop the Presses!!

Today the Tribune informed us (this being Holy Holy Pink Breast Cancer Month) that black women in Chicago die more often of breast cancer than white women do. And that the reason is--get this!--that black women are more likely to live in poverty and therefore to have less access to good health care.
This is news?
To whom might this be a surprise? Perhaps people who thought there might be parity in health care in the US, for some reason. Or people who thought Chicago was like New York City, which has clinics scattered more evenly around the city. The Trib tells us: "The racial gap in Chicago was twice that of the United States and sevenfold that of New York City." This would not be a surprise to anyone who read Shane Tritsch's fine piece a year ago in Chicago magazine on the "Deadly Difference."
I think the best way to improve health care in the US as well as education is: make everyone rich. Then everything else will follow. We could start be spreading the wealth of this bailout. And throw in the money that the Iraq war is costing every day, in people and materiel and after-effects.
Tony hits the silks!
Tony got laid off a few days ago after 18 years of his dutiful
service to the Times organization. Although we were never Tony's
big fans in any regard...he served the organization as proscribed.
S.J. Cahn was another great guy that got the ax a few years back.
S.J. actually printed our "Letters to Editor". We used to say:
"S.J. has vision...and everyone else is wearing bi-focals!" S.J.
understood before the "Blogspolsion" that "the truth" is a terrible
thing to waste! Tony on the other hand believed in "old style big
city news editors". "Treat them like mushrooms! Keep 'em in the
dark and feed them fertilizer!"
In any event, Tony kept to his agenda and we kept to ours. If
any lessons are to be learned....it is that restricting the flow
of information...never works in anyone's favor. Bob Rush, Linda
Orozco and even Dolores Otting..have all tried to get information
out to the public...and were all held back by Editors like Tony;
"We are just doing our jobs!" They all have families, advertisers,
"electeds", bureaucrats and publishers that have no qualms about
threatening their very survival. We have to admit we understand
that mentality and have empathy - without a doubt. However, in the
words of my Pop, "You are just shoveling stuff against the tide!"
- when we submitted our unpublished diatribes! We never believed
that negativity and kept trying...but Tony wasn't buying!
Brady Rhoades is the new Editor of the Daily Pilot, under very stern
and financial restrictions. His budget is limited, he choices are
limited and who knows what else! The main concept here is to unwrap
the Print media...to reflect the "Techy World we live in!" Perhaps,
Brady will be more in touch with those within the Newport Beach
community that have been dedicated to making it better...no matter
what their political persuasions or economic standing! We certainly
hope Brady can do the job and keep our bless Daily Plot in business!
Public Service and Event announcements are a base to go from.
Hopefully, Brady can find one good "Investigative Reporter" that he
can turn to during crisis...that has no political axes to grind.
To Tony....dude...we know you will be landing on your feet
bigtime wherever you go. You have been a "Gatekeeper" for long
enough, along with folks like Kenny the Printer..and thusly have
maintained our emerging Beach Community long enough, now allowing
it to grow into the true International Resort and Global Business
Destination - that it is today!

ANOTHER Rosansky Hit Piece
This one draws upon this Orange County Register article (Vacant house haunts Newport Beach Mayor) on Rosansky's rental house over in Newport Shores.
Also, rumor has it that Assistant City Manager Dave Kiff was part of the group who went and saw the Urine Samples as documented in the other picture.
Anyway...enough rumors.
Enjoy.

Slow Weekend
Maybe they'll all be coming during the week, or perhaps my Ex In laws tossed them all for me NOT to see...
Anyway, in my mailbox today, addressed to the wrong person of course, was another mailer from Dolores Otting's biggest fan Taxpayers for Safer Neighborhoods.
Pretty standard stuff.
Take a gander for yourself

Dolores Otting - Endorsed by the Daily Pilot!
Anyway, the Daily Pilot endorsements came out and...
BANG!!!!!
Dolores Otting has earned the Daily Pilot Endorsement!
Surprise?
Yeah, you could say so.
Most surprised of them all?
Even more surprised than Councilman Keith Curry?
Dolores Otting.
Well done.
More Axes at the Daily Pilot!
The most prominent victim this time?
The guy who took over when Tom Johnson quit.
Tony Dodero.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!
Here's Tony's letter:
My friends and colleagues:
Tough news today. I learned that effective this week, as part of another round of layoffs at our parent company, the Los Angeles Times, I will no longer be employed at the Daily Pilot and Times Community News. An official announcement/news story will be appear in the newspaper on Wednesday.
It's obviously a difficult time in the newspaper business and I'm no special exception to the rule, despite what my mom says.
Seriously though, for those of you I've known and worked with for years, I wish you all well and hope our paths will cross down the road soon.
I look forward to taking a new direction in my life and judging by the economy, it looks like my timing is impeccable as ever.
The Daily Pilot will be in good hands with the newsroom leadership of Brady Rhoades. He's a solid editor and newsman, whom I consider to be a friend as much as I do a colleague.
I was already complaining of the Pilot's lack of Newport Beach coverage, and serious lack of Political credibility. Two years ago, the Pilot had a strong Publisher in Tom Johnson, a strong editor in SJ Cahn, a smart political report in Alicia Robinson (in addition to the fine line of previous political writers), and a good Web Editor in Dodero.
Now...
As the Frank Sinatra version of the song goes...
...the End is near!
Dreaming of Cancer

The woman asked if I dreamed about cancer. She does. She is four years younger than I am, was diagnosed with the same stage (2A--the A makes it seem so tender, like the AA in one's first bra size) about a year behind me. She had chemo only four times instead of eight, and she had reconstructive surgery that started when the mastectomy was done. She had short curly hair and said she had terrible night sweats. And she dreamt a lot about cancer.
I never have. I have recurring dreams about failing to reach someone on a telephone. There are troubles with the buttons, I can never get the right numbers punched in. I have dreamed for years about having to put something large and opaque on my eye--like a leaf or a rock. I think this comes from my unconscious being freaked out by the thought of putting contacts on my eyeballs lo these many years. I dream about France and Houston and Eastern Europe. But I never dream about cancer.
Whenever someone says they've dreamed about me, I always ask: What was I wearing? In John Sayles' movie Passion Fish, the main character, who is paraplegic after an accident, dreams of being able to use her legs. I've never asked B, who has MS, if he dreams of walking and running. He probably does. There's an anecdote in Viktor Frankl's book Man's Search For Meaning. He tells of being in Auschwitz and hearing another prisoner cry out in his sleep. He wonders which would be more painful: to let the man continue his nightmare, or to wake the man up so that he could return to reality, in an extermination camp.
I wrote down my dreams for decades. When I was packing up this summer before moving, I threw files of them away. They were boring. I didn't want to re-read them. I didn't want to re-create those images in my head, those pieces of not-reality that would crowd out memories of things I really experienced. I know that Freud called dreams the royal road to the unconscious. I know that I threw out a written record of my unconscious. But I'm tired of analyzing. I've analyzed myself to the tune of $40 and $50 and $80 an hour while sitting on couch after couch with boxes of Kleenex close at hand. Once I even got health insurance to reimburse me for an hour of re-birthing. I have many faults and most of them are the same ones I've always had. I'm lazy and undisciplined and insecure and defensive and self-conscious. Prozac and its brethren got rid of the persistent lump in my throat. And for that I am grateful. Those pills have have also scraped away at my memory and my word-retrieval functions, but that is another story.
Tips memulai monetize blog
Yakinkan niat.
Kenali kemampuan diri kita sendiri.

One thing--really, two things--that have not come back all the way since chemo are my eyebrows. They had been thinning out as I'd gotten older, but they grew very very thin and weaselly during chemo and are still not as robust as I'd like. Pre-emptively, I bought an eyebrow stencil from Chemochicks, but I never had to use it because my eyebrows didn't completely disappear. I finally sent the stencil to L the chemo nurse and hope she passed it along to someone who needed it. At the time, I didn't think about how she could gracefully hand it to someone: Uh, I noticed you've lost your eyebrows, and you might want to take this stencil home with you and use it, so that you don't look like a possum....

***
I've noticed lately that when I see someone who is nice-looking, that person usually has dark eyebrows. I look at pictures of my younger self and I see I had dark eyebrows. Sometimes I pencil in darker brows. Yesterday and today I laid the pencil on thick. I thought I looked remarkably different--more vibrant, more ethnic, younger.
Of course, no one said a thing.
***
I suppose if I were really concerned, I could order eyebrow wigs--made of French lace and human hair. All of which begs: Why French lace? Are the eyebrows made up of spare strands of eyebrow or do they come from hair from people's heads? How do you donate hair for eyebrow wigs and how much does it pay?
There are people who have no hope of ever growing eyebrows of their own, and so these eyebrow wigs must be a godsend. As a society we're so intolerant of any difference or "defect," so that everyone who is missing something must take pains to get one or two of whatever-it-is right away.
***
My eyelashes, luckily, never completely went away, and I think they've restored themselves. Which reminds me--my eyes used to tear up easily when I went outside. Now they don't. I assumed that was a side effect of chemo and I think it was.

Dear Journalists,
I would like to bring a serious problem to your attention
that is occurring in the Newport Beach Community. Below is
a letter I sent to the City Council. I also sent the same
letter to the City Planning Commission. Attached is a chronology
of our family’s horrific experience at Narconon Newport Beach.
I think you can greatly help to address this problem by
providing the community and the nation with this information.
You can call me at ***-**-****.
Thank you!

Subject: Narconon
Dear City Council Member,
My name is ******** and I live in Silver Spring, Maryland
(outside of Washington D.C.). I would like to bring to your
attention a very disturbing experience our family had in your
community. Our daughter was enrolled in a drug treatment
facility called Narconon at Newport Beach. Attached is a letter
describing this horrific experience! In a very short period of
time, we lost $29,000 (college money) and my daughter continues
to suffer emotional pain. I have spoken with other parents
around the country and neighbors in your community. I was shocked
to find out that the problems from this criminal activity are
well known to the local government. Narconon is a business that
takes advantage of parents during a vulnerable period, causes
major harm to young people, and has compromised the peace and
equanimity of the surrounding community. In fact, the impact
of this pathology reaches across America. We have had enough
of this greed and corruption that permeates our communities
and damages our children and families!
Why is Narconon allowed to continue to operate? What do you
plan to do to eradicate this cancer in your community? If
you have known about this, how can you sleep at night? I beg
you to declare all out war on these “criminal cash cows” and
either properly regulate them or shut them down! This greed
and corruption will bring us all down if it is not stopped!
Please ACT!
Thank you,

10 Habits and Fact about me
Half Full

I organized a successful fundraiser last night but I keep looking at the dark side: OK, we raised about $7,000 or more, but my friend Maddy raised $30,000 in Northampton. We had a great mix of readers and readings, but it went on too long and we missed the first few minutes of the debate. We had a somewhat chaotic silent auction for books and cartoons and we (the fund raising we) have a box of books leftover in our already-messy office. Not to mention some cartoons, too. (I'm offering all for sale on line. Contact me if you want the list of offerings. Deadline for bidding is 11:59 p.m. Friday.) We raised $6,500 for Obama for America, but I should have designated the money collected at the door last night ($1,500) for the buses to take canvassers to Iowa. That would have doubled the amount I did turn in to finance the buses, from sales of buttons, stickers, books and cartoons. We have wine and soft drinks left over. Do I feel bad about that too? I don't think so.
Everyone told me how great it was. My main fear had been that the set-up for watching the debate wouldn't work, but Chopin Theatre co-owner Zygmunt Dyrkac, who doesn't own a TV himself, had a flat-screen TV for us. I asked him how he did it. Magic, he said. On stage, he said, we kill people, we have people fall in love who hate each other. Creating a TV was easy.

Questions to Steve Rosansky and the Daily Pilot.
Councilman Rosansky keeps touting his accomplishments with the Rehab Home issue. So here are my questions regarding that.
1. He says that he was the key organizer of a statewide conference over A YEAR AND A HALF AGO involving many other cities and leaders.
Question - HAS THERE BEEN ANY FOLLOWUP? WHAT WAS THE RESULT OF THAT CONFERENCE? HAVE THERE BEEN ANY OTHER CONFERENCES?
The answer is NO, NONE, and NO. There was a conference and nothing else happened. It was a meeting just for the sake of having a meeting.
2. He says that his work led to State Senator Tom Harman following his lead and introducing legislation (which failed).
As I understand it (and I haven't spoken directly with Senator Harman), Senator Harman heard this was an issue, wanted to meet with City Leaders to address it, and Steve Rosansky tagged along for the ride AFTER THE FACT. Supposedly, he was invited to a meeting AFTER the meeting was set.
3. He says that he voted in favor to pass an ordinance with limits the Group Homes.
Question - what has contributed more to the decreased amount of Group Homes in Newport Beach?
The Economy?
The Ordinance?
Let's see, the Sober Living By the Sea deal was THAT THEY WERE CLOSING HOMES THAT WERE ALREADY CLOSED.
I think that was an economy issue...
Now, the Daily Pilot article.
"Rosansky later helped Princic lease in 1999 on one unit of the duplex to a man the mayor later learned operated a group home in Costa Mesa.
Rosansky brokered another lease on the other unit of the duplex in 2004 with the same group home operator, who told the mayor he wanted to use the unit as his home office. Concerned the duplex could be used for business dealings of the rehab home, Rosansky stipulated in the lease the second unit could not be used for that purpose. The terms of the lease obtained by the Daily Pilot states “premises are not to be used for recovery housing.”
“I made it very clear he could not do any type of group home housing at this property, the mailer is totally false,” Rosansky said."
ARE YOU TELLING ME THAT STEVE ROSANSKY RENTED TO A KNOWN GROUP HOME OPERATOR, WHO WANTED TO USE THE UNIT AS HIS HOME OFFICE, AND DIDN'T EXPECT HIM TO USE IT FOR BUSINESS DEALINGS OF A REHAB HOME??????
What kind of business did Steve Rosansky expect him to conduct in his home office?
Girl Scout cookies?
Mary Kay cosmetics?
I guess when a lawyer uses a home office FOR BUSINESS, he doesn't do his law business from it?
Why didn't the Daily Pilot follow up on that glaring omission?
Now, here's the kicker.
and Councilman Steve Rosansky needs to be asked this.
If the house wasn't supposed to be used as a Group Home, then why were City officials asked to inspect the property numerous times?
and
WHY DID STEVE ROSANSKY HIMSELF FEEL AS THOUGH HE HAD TO INSPECT THE PROPERTY TO MAKE SURE IT WASN'T BEING USED AS A GROUP HOME?
And then ask Rosansky what he saw when he personally inspected it?
All the years I've rented, I've never had my landlord, or any City Officials, come and inspect my home.
And I'm a deviant in many meanings of the word...
But let's just say for argument's sake that the home wasn't a Group Home, per se, but actually a true home office, conducting Group Home business, of course,
Didn't the work he did there help facilitate the Group Home business and weren't the checks Rosansky received still tainted by Rehab Dollars?
and wasn't Rosansky a Councilman during that time?
So with that logic...
- Money received from a drug dealers can't be construed as coming from drug dealing sources.
and
- Money received from a Group Home operator can't be construed as coming from Group Home sources.
Dirty money is still dirty money.
More than 7 Seconds.
Since it usually takes about 7 seconds for someone to pick it up from their stack of mail, walk it over and drop it into the trash.
So people spend between $10k and $20k for 7 seconds of your time.
And that's only if their mailer is on the top of the stack...
So what the Orange County Register (here and here) and the Daily Pilot (here) helped stretch those dollars out.
LOTS!
If someone threw those mailers out when they received them, then they got a second chance to see it.
If I were the people paying for the mailers, I'd be very, very happy.
If I were the people benefiting/hit in the mailers, I'd be very, very upset.
Talk about stretching your dollars...
No Keith Curry?
Well...Newporters for Ethical Government must be happy today because it seems as though Councilman Rosansky has been taken off his game plan.
And frankly, I'm really surprised that his political consultant is letting him do that.
Councilman Steve Rosansky is the incumbent City Councilmember.
With just that, all he should be doing is touting how great the City is.
How great Newport Beach is doing.
How it can afford to pay for the White Elephant.
How strong our Newport Beach economy is doing (with a budget which borrows millions and millions to balance it).
ALL HE SHOULD BE DOING IS ASSOCIATING HIMSELF WITH HOW GOOD THE CITY IS DOING!
Instead, he feels like he has to respond to the Hit Pieces (here and here) sent out by Newporters for Ethical Government.
And he's wasting his money doing it.
Consider this, he only raised $28k as of September 30, with cash on hand of only $17k.
And each of these mailers usually cost between $10k and $20k depending on how large his mailing universe is.
Best case scenario? He's spent $20k for the two mailers.
So unless he's loaned his campaign some serious money, with the two mailers sent out this past weekend, he's out of money.
And out of future mailers.
That is...unless...he's willing to have an Independent Expenditure Committee (like the Fire Union did - see the irony?) help him out.
Anyway, on this latest mailer (again, sorry I'll post it later) is a letter talking about the "Smear Mailer." and is signed by Newport Beach's Councilmembers.
But there's one Councilmember's signature who is glaringly missing.
Councilman Keith Curry's.

In the Mail!
Not going to comment on them...just going to post them.
Although...good thing none of these mailers were made of Styrofoam...otherwise Big Brother (I mean our Newport Beach Communist City Council) would have BANNED them...

Praise the Lord & Pass the Ammunition

Now seems like a good time to quote from Mark Twain's War Prayer, published posthumously:
"'O Lord our Father, our young patriots, idols of our hearts, go forth to battle -– be Thou near them! With them, in spirit, we also go forth from the sweet peace of our beloved firesides to smite the foe. O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with their little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it –- for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.'"

Dear Friends,
As politics have evolved in our city, it’s rare to see
one man funding the circumvention of our campaign contribution
limits. But it still happens and it’s happening now.
Overtime, many good citizens from all walks of life have
struggled to enact campaign laws that protect voters, as
best they can, from exploitation of the system by money
alone. But every law has its limitations and vulnerability
to those who would find a way to avoid its consequences.
Jack Croul, who spent $680,000 to place city hall on Newport
Center Park, is now out to get Councilman Keith Curry. Since
our campaign finance laws limit individuals to a $500
contribution, Mr. Croul is using hidden, out-of-town political
action committees to enable the use of unlimited funds. Mr.
Croul has funded so far more than $25,000 in hit pieces, slate
mailers, and polls for Dolores Otting.
Dolores Otting says all of this happened without her knowing
anything about it. Having been involved in political races
myself, this sort of disclaimer is always hard to believe.
Even more egregious is the statement I read in the press that
Mr. Croul didn’t know what the contents of the recent mailer
would be. If I were going to spend $25,000 or more to
influence an election, I would certainly want to know exactly
what I was foisting off on the voting public.
Councilman Curry took a courageous stand to defend Newport
Center Park and to honor his promises to the people. Now,
for whatever his reasons, Mr. Croul is using the big money
route to try to oust Councilman Curry and install someone
more controllable.
Perhaps it’s just naïve to think that Newport Beach voters
are anxious to keep our electioneering as close to home and
visible as possible. With very large amounts of money being
introduced by essentially one person and through out-of-town
committees, it’s as if Newport Beach is for sale to the
highest bidder and I don’t think any of us want that.
So, let’s try to push back this apparent power grab and say
“our city is not for sale”! You can help. Please send a
contribution in any amount (we have a $500 limit), including
the name of your employer to “Keith Curry for City Council”,
40 Vienna, Newport Beach, CA 92660. (Corporate contributions
are acceptable and contributions are not tax deductible.
Campaign ID Number 1282508)
Thanks so much,
Jean Watt
Newport Beach Councilmember 1988-1996

Most Conservative City Council Member in Newport Beach - Nancy Gardner?
Councilwoman Nancy Gardner used to be registered in the Green Party. At least until she decided to run for the Newport Beach City Council in 2006, when she re-registered as a Decline to State voter.
So I ran into this article from Dana Parsons which confused the heck out of me.
1. LA Times wrote something of a somewhat Fiscal Conservative nature.
2. Councilwoman Nancy Gardner saying that Newport Beach needs to show some fiscal restraint in building it's new White Elephant.
Nancy's quote from the article,
"The interesting thing about Newport Beach," Gardner says, "is that while we have a lot of money, we also have a lot of fiscal conservatives. There were a lot of people from the beginning who said not only do we not need a new City Hall, we need fewer employees."
Very well said Nancy.
Nancy also was a proponent of keeping City Hall on the "not so glitzy site" on Newport Blvd, where it currently resides.
The article continues,
"Is it possible the costs could get out of hand?
"I'm very concerned about that," Gardner says. "I'm concerned because I didn't feel I was getting a real clear answer on what the real price is going to be.""
During this election season, I would have certainly expected to see the Councilman up for re-election Conservative Keith Curry jumping at the opportunity to show his Fiscal Conservativeness in this type of article, saying that:
- Government should be smaller
- Costs need to be watched and kept under control.
Fascinating.
Nancy's best quote?
When asked what kind of statement should the new White Elephant make?
"I don't want it to be something that goes bling, bling, bling."
Again Nancy, well said.
